Today I found myself in line behind a mother and her very active toddler. She was trying to unload her cart and wrangle him, and he was having none of it. So I started talking to him about his cookie monster hat and a display of Pez dispensers with Batman, Thor, and a bunch of Princesses I know nothing about. And, even though I understood none of what he said, he seemed to be very happy to tell me everything he knew about each of the characters he saw.
His mother completed their purchase and loaded her cart to leave. I waved “bye” to the little boy and turned to start unloading my own cart. Suddenly, there’s a little boy hugging my legs and holding up his hand for what his mother explained to me was a high-five.
Here’s the thing about kindness. Sometimes you get so much more than you give.
